Imagine the coverage a Democratic senator would have gotten by breaking with his party to help George Bush pass his Social Security plan.

Lieberman is the Madonna of the political arena. Except that in late-career Madonna can still sometimes get the camera to focus on her. Gotta wonder what lofty principle Lieberman is invoking to override the will of 59 colleagues and the preference of 48-42% of the American people. Where’s Hulk Hogan now that the Republicans really need him.

Bill, this sauce was pretty weak the first time you cooked it up, and it doesn’t look like you’ve improved on the recipe. Lieberman’s statement of a policy preference paled in comparison to his statement that he’d filibuster the health care bill that Senator Reid introduced last week. Any fair editor, liberal or conservative, mainstream or alternative, political or apolitical, can tell you that one of those things was a story, and the other was not. The Lieberman story pre-filibuster was an attempt by an increasingly irrelevant politician to grab a headline. The ‘Joe vs. the Volcano’ filibuster declaration was a major news development.

And if you want to talk about liberal vs. conservative tolerance, well, I think Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava could probably offer you a talking point or two.
