Dallas Cowboys form a (very) heavy metal band

Three offensive linemen for the Dallas Cowboys have had a mildly entertaining offseason. Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis and Cory Procter, along with non-football-playing guitarist Justin Chapman, have created the heavy metal band Free Reign. That’s 1,200 pounds of sound, for those counting.

Don’t laugh. They already have a record deal.

Marc Colombo lowers his bald head and leans his sweaty, 6-foot-8, 318-pound frame toward the microphone, growling to the crowd that the next song will “rip your face off.”

The sometimes scary stage presence of the heavily tattooed guitarist and singer, who is one of three Dallas Cowboys offensive linemen in the heavy metal band Free Reign, is a thing of beauty for the head of the recording company that just signed them.

“They’re big guys – big, ugly, mean guys,” said John Howarth, owner and CEO of the Australian company Riot Entertainment. “You see the press photos and they look intimidating, and thats the market we want to push into.”

Here’s a video. Hint: Expect lots of sweat and screaming. I’ll let the heavy metal fans among us rate the band. Me? I think they shouldn’t quit their day job.

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer based in Charlotte, N.C., a Yankee transplant in a Bible belt town that is home to Billy Graham, TARP-infused banks, stock-car racing and that signature Southern culinary abomination: Barbeque.

I write mostly about sports as a regular contributor to The New York Times. I was a staff writer at the Detroit Free Press, Hartford Courant and other newspapers. Over the years, I have written for many publications and Web sites, covering everything from the Super Bowl to the Daytona 500. When it comes to sports, I am usually irreverent, occasionally indignant and sometimes intolerant of folks who take this form of entertainment too seriously. It's supposed to be a game, you know.
