Pat Robertson forgets his doctors

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson underwent 10 hours of surgery to repair a heart disorder and is back in Virginia recovering, a spokesman said Monday.
10 hours of surgery. That has a lot to do with why I’m not a surgeon. An impatient bladder, recurrent hypoglycemia and an apparently hard-wired need for eight hours of sleep nightly make me completely unsuitable for a surgical profession. But I digress.
What struck me about this article was Mr. Robertson’s assessment of his experience:
“Only the prayers of thousands of believing people kept me on this earth,” Mr. Robertson said in a statement.
Because, you know, that ten-hour surgery clearly had nothing to do with his continued existence. Just prayers, man.
I’m not discounting anyone’s religious beliefs, but give the mortals who are scrubbed in for hours at a time a little credit.

He couldn’t possibly give his doctors any credit. What if one of them turned out to be a Jew, a Muslim, or – god forbid – an Atheist?!? Robertson probably preached to them instead of thanking them for saving his pathetic little life. Imagine- god needed thousands of prayers, a team of doctors, and modern science to save his annointed point man! Some god, huh?
oops, i hate to say it, but it was my prayers that gave him the heart disorder in the first place.
Ah yes, prayers but he wasn’t faithful enough to rely only on prayers, when God offers to send you to paradise you might consider the heavenly offer nor did he show any annoyance at a God who gave him a bum heart to in the first place.

**Troy Davis and Mumia Abu ~Jamal are 2 perfect examples of American citizens who never had proper legal representation or defense investigations afforded them by our U.S. Congressional Leaders Of The Free World in their initial criminal trials in (Georgia and Pennsylvania) who might very well have to pay the ultimate price of possibly being completely innocent and falsely executed in the near future.
**These two poor Americans are among tens of thousands of legal cases nationwide that never were afforded proper legal representation or proper defense investigations at their initial trials. **We the public really have no idea if these men are innocent or guilty until they both are given fair legal representation at their new future trials.

Robertson did thank his doctors in the statement that CBN released. The WSJ simply cut the quote short.
Robertson said, “Only the prayers of thousands of believing people kept me on this earth. As it is, I anticipate many more years of creative service in the ministry I founded (CBN), as well as Regent University and other endeavors devoted to the service of mankind. I cannot praise enough the dedication and professionalism of Dr. Andy Kiser and his staff who removed this growth from my continuously beating heart.”

I, too, find him to be a total douche, but we need not ascribe things to him that aren’t true… as there is ample stuff out there for which he has truly earned our scorn.
Thanks for pointing that out, honeybaked. As you mentioned, the WSJ didn’t mention the latter part of his quote. Even so, the upshot of the statement seems to favor the effect of the prayers over the efforts of the physicians.

I suspect that, because Robertson is (deservedly or not) an established target, selective quotation is inevitable. Just as inevitable as your response to the selective quoting of the man.
