Steve Jobs fights back against iPhone Antennagate

Steve Jobs' press conference on the iPhone 4's well-reported reception problems is just wrapping up in Northern California, and I have to agree with New York Times reporter John Markoff's assessment:
Basically a Harvard Business School tutorial on how to turn a crisis into an opportunity...

Are iPhone customers modern-day lemmings?

I used to believe that all the problems with the iPhones were AT&T's fault. And I remember I couldn't decide who angered me more -- AT&T, for actually charging money for devices that could get its network to provide the service that it had originally promised, or iPhone customers, [...]

Russian president is iPhone compatible

image thumbnail - see full story for attributions
The verdict is in: Dmitry Medvedev can keep the iPhone Steve Jobs gave him yesterday. Speaking to journalists in California, Medvedev's spokeswoman said that, unlike the American president, the Russian President is not prohibited from having a cell phone. (It was considered a big personal victory when Obama was allowed to [...]

Be a Mom: Put Down the Blackberry

I'm fairly certain that when my kids think back on their childhood, they'll picture me with a blue glow around the back of my head. They'll have a perfect memory of the top of their father's head. We are modern parents, which means we also spend far too much time [...]

Apple aims to beat Google, win ad market with iPhone 4

image thumbnail - see full story for attributions
Apple was competing with itself as much as with rival Google Monday when CEO Steve Jobs  unveiled the flashy iPhone 4 with no less than 100 features.  Call it the curse of Apple's meteoric market cap. Its new video chat (FaceTime)  sleekness aside, Apple’s latest mobile icon was immediately compared to [...]

Krossroads for Kindle or Running the Table(ts) Before Apple's Unveiling

So, it's not exactly a secret that Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference gets underway next week in San Francisco and the newest iteration of the iPhone is expected to be released. There's also all sorts of rumors about other things that may or may not be unveiled. A new version of MobileMe? An [...]

Jerusalem headaches for iPhone users

image thumbnail - see full story for attributions
It looks like Jerusalem's political status is making life hell for iPhone app developers. Yahoo! just revised their iPhone app to delete "Jerusalem, Israel" as a listed city for weather forecasts and other services. Instead, there is "East Jerusalem, Palestinian Occupied Territories" and "West Jerusalem, Israel." Israel-based blog Jewlicious summed it up: [...]

Smartphones, AT&T and the economics of data

Blogger Jim Ray has an eminently sensible take on the just-announced changes to AT&T's smartphone data charges. In a nutshell, the carrier is about to scrap its current $30/mo. unlimited  plan in favor of a tiered system: $15/mo for 200 megabytes, $25/mo. for 2 gigabytes. Why? Here's Ray:
I’m [...]

ipod.  iphone.  ipad.  ican'tkeepup. Is it just me, or are we all so "tuned in" that we are losing touch?  I haven't embraced this ibusiness.  And, I don't think it's because I'm a mom, or because I'm, ahem, 'older' now and edging towards my 40th.  No, that's not it.  Many other [...]

A smartphone app for the oil spill

image thumbnail - see full story for attributions
As the engineering professor from Purdue University, Steve Wereley, told the Senate this week, the BP oil leak is larger than we thought.  His estimate of the spill is based on analysis of a video showing a gusher of oil coming from near where the well’s blowout-preventer was.  According to [...]
