‘Muscle March’ is Everything That’s WTF About Japanese Games, and It’s Coming to America

muscle-march

It’s really easy to make fun of Japanese games, which are stereotyped as being loud, flashy, full of ridiculous music and a whole lot of stuff that is best described as WTF. But stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason, and that couldn’t be more clear when viewing the trailer for Muscle March.

The game, for some reason, thinks it’s actually going to find an audience in America, which is why it’s premiering on WiiWare this winter for download.

From what I can tell by trying to comprehend the insane trailer, a football player has stolen your protein powder, and you must chase him through walls, moving the Wii-mote in certain ways so you fit through the holes in said walls. Am I getting that right? You can play as one of many differently colored buff dudes, one buff chick (I think) and a polar bear. Because why the hell not?

Are you ready for this? I don’t think you are.

MIND BLOWN.

I’m so embarrassed. On behalf of my country…I apologize in advance.

    WTF is right!

Those muscle men made me gag. Maybe the males are supposed to look ridiculous, but the feminist in me is not pleased. We don’t need more males with body-image complexes.

Holy shit, I almost choked from laughing.

If nothing else, I hope this game opens the door to more Japanese weirdness crossing the ocean and landing on Wii. Not saying MY Wii, but you know …

It’s just sad that so few Japanese games sell well in America these days. With Sega barely in the biz anymore, we need more eastern weirdness than just Mario and Katamari.

There is a game show from Japan that was stolen by Americans called hole in the wall. As the name implies, it involves people twisting their body to fit in a hole that is in a wall moving towards them. Big in Japan I guess, but not all that good IMO (yes, I actually watched it).

That had to at least part of the inspiration for this game and they had to develop at least some sort of story to explain why they are doing it so taken in that context it is less WTF…… but still pretty WTF.

    About Me

After rising to blogging fame as the University of Michigan's answer to Gossip Girl, I took the EIC job at a student blog network spreading my wealth of college experience across the nation. My passion project is a movie/tv/gaming site called Unreality and I'm a movie news editor at JoBlo.com. I'm new to this business, and I think I'm a part of the first generation of journalists to skip print media entirely. When I started out, I had zero idea blogging could be a career, but I've learned more in the last ten months than I did in four years of college. What exactly did I major in again?
