Play Games…For Free…For Charity

Do you want to play video games for charity, but don’t have the time or energy to stage a 48 hour playthough of every Mario game ever? Well that’s why “backpacker turned software engineer” Adam Archer started GamesThatGive, a free gaming site that donates 70% of its revenue to various charities. Archer explains:
On GamesThatGive, your micro-donation is the equivalent of a raindrop. The more frequently and the longer you play, and the better you score, the more micro-donations you generate. When you play games on GamesThatGive, when you invite your friends to play as well, when they invite their friends, and on and on, the micro-donations add up.
Essentially, the more people who come to play, and the longer they stay, the more money is made to be donated. Speaking as someone who makes a living selling ads on blogs they’ve started, I’ve got to tell you it’s not easy, and I can only imagine finally being profitable, then giving all the money away. You are a better man than I, Adam Archer, probably in part because your name sounds like the alter ego of a superhero.
Here’s a quick rundown of the site, which you should now head over to and waste an hour doing Sudoku. It’s better than tearing it out of the paper, it’s for charity!
The Games:
Solitare, Sudoku, Gems, Bubble Burst, Word Search, Drull. Smashteroids, Blackjack, Memory
The Charities:
United Way, Jump Start, Mercy Corps, DoSomething.org, Breast Cancer Network of Strength, IAVA, Feeding American, Access, City Year, UNICEF, AHA, The Wilderness Society, Ronald McDonald House
My only suggestion here would be that it looks like there’s a ton of charities being supported here, possibly even too many. Like it’s great to raise money for all of them, but if you’re dividing an already small pie into fractions, maybe it’s best to just pick a few and really lay down some cash?

Supporting the Ronald McDonald house is pretty strange. McDonald’s makes billions in profits by advertising atrociously unhealthy foods to children, and then they give a very small portion of it to charity. And, on top of that, they have duped people into giving away their money to said charity, which in turn provides McDonalds with a better, more socially conscious, image, so they can continue to brain wash children and make them obese, which wil probably have them turning up in these same hospitals 40 years down the line. (Not to mention that they sell grotesque amounts of animal products)
