Remembering Michael Jackson’s Video Game: ‘Moonwalker’
Now that Michael Jackson has passed, everyone is talking about what an icon he was and how he changed music and pop culture forever. This is all exceptionally true, but there’s one form of media he dipped his toe in briefly that isn’t mentioned: video games. No, his game, Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, didn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but looking back, it’s still pretty excellent nonetheless.
As you’ll see in the video above, the 1990 Sega Genesis game was more or less about Michael Jackson saving little kids (hold all jokes) from the Mafia, or maybe just a bunch of evil dudes wearing suits. He danced his way around the screen, killing bad guys with his pixie dust kick, his toe-spin, his boomerang hat, and best yet, his assimilating dance number. It’s his grand finale special move, where he makes all the bad guys dance a routine with him. At the end, they all die, presumably from exhaustion.
No, it’s not the greatest game in the world. The controls are pretty awful and they don’t even play “Thriller” during the graveyard level, but it just goes to show that Michael Jackson was truly a master of all media, big and small.

What a wonderfully bizarre totally strange video game. It made no sense, and did not play well, and was so weirdly fun.

I never had the home version, but I remember really liking the arcade version… just found a video of it. Check out the super move at 1:54, how sweet is that?
