How to travel with your vibrator

Jimmyjane vibrator

I get oodles of emails about travel-related products. The latest to splat on my MacBook screen was from Jimmyjane.

The company website describes Jimmyjane as “a design-centric brand founded on the belief that life is better with a sexy twist. We design products and experiences to provide pleasure, strengthen connection and create provocative possibility.”

Jimmyjane’s online shop includes vibrators, candles, massage, gifts, pleasure sets, special editions and “more thrills”. They even have a sale section that currently features a natural massage oil candle reduced from $55 to $35.

Their products can also be found at specialty retail outlets, plus in rooms at W Hotels Worldwide, The Delano in Miami and The Metropolitan in London. As their website explains, “Think of it as room service, only better.”

To assist the legions of vibrating travelers, they offer Five Five Tips for Traveling With your Vibrator:

1. If possible, remove the batteries. This is the surefire way to prevent your vibrator from accidentally turning on during transit and discharging all its battery power. Place your batteries in a plastic bag and store them separately from the vibrator casing.

2. Choose products that have a lock feature. If you’re traveling with a rechargeable vibrator, or a vibrator whose battery can’t be removed, check if it has a lock feature. This will prevent it from turning on, even if its buttons are accidentally pressed. FORM 2 and FORM 6 can both be locked.

3. Choose products that are small and/or discreetly designed. Small vibrators are perfect for travel, as they can be stashed just about anywhere and are less likely to draw attention. Alternatively, a larger vibrator with a simple, understated design (e.g. no zebra stripes or glittery rabbit ears) can be an ideal option.

4. Pack it between other items. Rather than let your vibrator roam freely in your carry-on or luggage, pack it in a carrying case or plastic bag, and place it between layers of clothing. Should your bag get searched, this will buy you time to quietly explain that you’re carrying a sex accessory, and ask that your bag be searched in private.

5. If questioned, answer honestly. While it may be tempting to insist your vibrator is really a pencil case/chew toy/marching band baton, lying could land you in hot water. Keep it brief when answering all questions and use straightforward, clinical terms. And relax; security personnel have seen it all and have been trained to be sensitive in these matters. Once they realize what that curious little gadget is, they’ll most likely send you on your merry way.

So, just to recap: Buy Jimmyjane brand vibrators! They give travel vibrator travel advice any idiot could have figured out.

I’m shocked to make this observation at True/Slant, but I must question whether this post was anything more than a re-write of a press release with a title allowing it to masquerade as travel advice. Meanwhile, eager young j-school grads, like myself, can’t get any work.

Nope, the only “rewrite” was the part that I put in quotes. As a travel journalist for the past 20+ years, I get a lot of goofy emails, and this is one topic that somehow has bypassed me. I posted it as I thought it was so goofy that people have to worry about packing/traveling with their vibrators … it was nothing more. It’s my True/Slant, and there are people that I’m sure will find it useful. Product placement is everywhere … just curious as how you stumbled upon this particular post?

    About Me

I'm a professional freelance writer and photographer who has been in the journalism 'biz since 1988. I live on a small farm on an island in Puget Sound with my husband, chickens, turkeys and our very own field of dreams. When I'm not packing and unpacking from exploring the seven continents (yup, I've done 'em all), I enjoy theater, movies, jazz, fine food, heavenly spas and long dinner parties with my family and friends. Oh, I grew up in the '60s and I sort of remember it through the haze.
