Former Miss Argentina dies following plastic surgery; medical tourism hit by recession

While traveling in Argentina in February 2009, I met a couple while awaiting a table at La Cabrera in the Palermo Soho area of Buenos Aires. They were from the Midwest — he was a manufacturer of big farm equipment and she — well, she was in BA having some work done.

Yup, she flew to South America to go under the knife, along with having some cosmetic dental work. Not only was she happy with the results (this wasn’t her first trip abroad to improve her appearance), the price tag was appealing, too.

Now word comes that a former Miss Argentina recently died from complications following buttocks surgery. Just Google plastic surgery South America and you’ll find no shortage of entries like this one.

Although medical tourism is projected to be a $100 billion industry by 2010, according to the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, the current recession has carved away at the numbers of patients traveling abroad for elective surgery.

More Info: According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the US demand for types of cosmetic surgery varies depending on your zip code.

When I read about this story, I was angry and yet, why does it have to be such a stupid and funny way to die. Ass implants, jesus. I have known for some time that South America is the world center for cosmetic surgery. But why isn’t anyone regulating this stuff down there? Especially as the products people put into their bodies become more and more questionable?

    About Me

I'm a professional freelance writer and photographer who has been in the journalism 'biz since 1988. I live on a small farm on an island in Puget Sound with my husband, chickens, turkeys and our very own field of dreams. When I'm not packing and unpacking from exploring the seven continents (yup, I've done 'em all), I enjoy theater, movies, jazz, fine food, heavenly spas and long dinner parties with my family and friends. Oh, I grew up in the '60s and I sort of remember it through the haze.
