Fashionistas: Helsinki for vintage clothing

pinupgirl-lg

Vintage and second-hand fashion are more popular than ever with a resurgence of the retro look and a focus on being eco-conscious. And stylish Helsinki, Finland is on the cutting edge. It’s downtown neighborhoods of Punavuori, Kruunuhaka, Toolo and Kallio feature a variety of vintage stores that sell clothing, accessories, furniture and other decorative items.

Here are some of the shops:

Vintage Babushka

A newcomer in Helsinki’s shopping scene, this shop is run by a trio of friends with a passion for quality vintage apparel and accessories. Already a favorite among the hipsters of the vibrant Punavuori neighborhood, Vintage Babushka showcases well-selected seasonal collections. This fall’s theme is Back to Black.

Helsinki 10

In addition to new designer goods, Helsinki 10 offers trendy second-hand seasonal clothing suited. With items for both women and men, collections include everything from leather jackets to floral dresses.

Penny Lane Boutique

Owned and operated by a former Miss Finland who worked as a flight attendant for more than 40 years, the shop offers quality second-hand and vintage clothing and accessories including vintage ball gowns and formal dresses.

In addition, the twice-yearly Helsinki Vintage Fair includes nearly 50 of Finland’s best vintage and second-hand dealers. Each fair features a fashion show, live retro music, an exhibition of vintage arcade games and a café. The next vintage fair is scheduled for September 27 at Kaapelitehdas.

    About Me

I'm a professional freelance writer and photographer who has been in the journalism 'biz since 1988. I live on a small farm on an island in Puget Sound with my husband, chickens, turkeys and our very own field of dreams. When I'm not packing and unpacking from exploring the seven continents (yup, I've done 'em all), I enjoy theater, movies, jazz, fine food, heavenly spas and long dinner parties with my family and friends. Oh, I grew up in the '60s and I sort of remember it through the haze.
