Maybe because my son no longer lives in Manhattan, but somehow I missed the news that New York is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2009.

But there are no shortage of events honoring Henry Hudson’s discovery of New York Harbor in 1609. One of the grande dames of NYC’s hotel scene, The Pierre on Fifth Avenue overlooking New York’s Central Park, has a special September 3 rate of $400. Accommodation includes a classic room complete with continental breakfast. If you spend an additional night, you’ll also receive the $400 rate.

Toast the anniversary with a classic cocktail in the hotel’s new destination bar and lounge, Two E. The Pierre reopened on June 1, 2009 following a $100 million renovation.

Throughout the city, there are a number of events and museum exhibits celebrating the Dutch age of exploration that resulted in the founding of New Amsterdam on what was then the island of Manhattan. Visit www.ny400.org to learn more.

Book the 400th anniversary night package by calling The Pierre at 800.743.7734.

About Me

I'm a professional freelance writer and photographer who has been in the journalism 'biz since 1988. I live on a small farm on an island in Puget Sound with my husband, chickens, turkeys and our very own field of dreams. When I'm not packing and unpacking from exploring the seven continents (yup, I've done 'em all), I enjoy theater, movies, jazz, fine food, heavenly spas and long dinner parties with my family and friends. Oh, I grew up in the '60s and I sort of remember it through the haze.
