Sure could use a little good news today
Yes, the headline derives from a popular song by recorded decades ago by Anne Murray. If you’ve never listened to the surprisingly deep, bracing lyrics, never listened to Murray deliver those lyrics with feeling, I recommend you listen.
But I mention the song not for the entertainment value. Rather, it entered my mind unbidden after yet another day of me reading the Innocence Blog.
Regular readers of “In Justice” have seen my words praising the daily compilation of news regarding imprisoned women and men who are actuallhy innocent and working for their freedom against huge odds imposed by the criminal justice system.
Well, like the Anne Murray character in the song, I’d like to experience a day without reading the Innocence Blog–not reading it because nobody who helps compile it could find anything new to share about wrongful convictions.
I hope fervently that police detectives, prosecutors, defense lawyers and judges will collaborate to repair the criminal justice system so that wrongful convictions never occur again.

Agreed. But more good headline news from NC: “Innocent Hot Springs man set free from prison, 17 years late” as reported by the Citizen-Times. The great news is his exoneration; the sad news is 17+ years of his life spent being tormented and likely abused for the worst crime to be convicted for behind bars; 17+ years of pain and anguish suffered by those who stood behind his innocence. And enduring 11 more years beyond the victim’s recantation of the allegations against the accused!
It just seems that it takes so little unsubstantiated “proof” to convict someone of these horrible allegations; yet when the supposed victim does come forth and “tells the truth”, THEN the system wants all it’s check and balances in place to be sure the “victim” has no motive for lying; something that wasn’t done during the initial investigation. It’s not about truth; its about appearance, politics and lawsuits…or simply put; “the need to win at any cost”! I wish everyone would read and understand what is truly happening to innocent Americans across this country everyday and stop the prejudice and bias that contributes to wrongful convictions.

Joe Friday eloquently exposes the one-sided nature of the criminal justice system when police and prosecutors and judges decide “winning” trumps justice. Except that when a wrongful conviction occurs, nobody wins and everybody loses.
