The stars of the Nigerian Film Industry

nolly_2Time has a great slideshow featuring the stars of Nigeria’s movie industry.

I first discovered Nollywood when I lived in Lagos back in 2001. The movies are as low-budget as you get-many get made for as little as $8,000. But they’re lots of fun and obviously resonate with their audience. Wikipedia says the Nigerian industry is now the second largest in the world, in terms of films released, and Nigeria is one of the few countries where people prefer local productions to Hollywood blockbusters. Maybe the French should take some notes.

Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for the first big crossover.

[update: I love the kid with the soccer ball on his head. He's probably not in the movie. But he should be.]
