Prepare for the racism onslaught immigration reform will bring

WASHINGTON - MARCH 21: Protestors Sofia Palom...

It isn’t that I’m not savoring the passage of the (diluted, but still impressive) health care bill. And it isn’t that there isn’t still a lot of procedural crap to deal with before the legislation is put to bed. But given the enormous immigration reform march that took place in Washington this past weekend, it’s worth looking forward to whether that issue will be the next major cause of the Obama administration. (As Jay-Z would say, “On to the Next One.”)

Though immigration reform, like health care, is a monumentally worthy issue to tackle, I’m already cringing in anticipation of the tidal wave of racism it’s sure to unleash among Tea Partiers and others. If a universal issue like health care can evoke racist tirades directed at members of Congress, just think of how those same people are likely to react to a cause involving mostly people with brown skin.

As I mentioned in my last post, the Tea Party rang in its first official convention with a speech by professional immigrant-basher Tom Tancredo. In introducing the party to the world, he suggested that President Obama was elected by  “people who could not even spell the word vote or say it in English” (confusing, you see, since I not only just spelled it, but typed it).

In California, a state that is home to an enormous number of immigrants both illegal and legal, gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner seems to be making a last-ditch effort to overcome his poll deficit to Meg Whitman by trotting out that tried-and-true standard: immigrant-bashing. Poizner is placing the blame for California’s budget problems on those who have no say in the matter, illegal immigrants, and recently suggested that all illegal immigrant children should be tossed out of public schools. Peter Schrag rightly responded in the Los Angeles Times, noting “If there is one lesson that can be drawn from our long history of immigration, and the equally long backlash against it, it’s this: Bumper sticker politics — like the kind infusing the GOP governor’s race — aren’t good enough. They’re almost as old as America, and they usually turn out to be wrong.”

Considering the Tea Party’s celebration of documented racist James O’Keefe and his efforts to bring down ACORN – an organization that does all kinds of terrible things like advocate for fair housing standards on behalf of minorities, or tries to protect the voting rights of the disenfranchised – its members are likely to go into full-blown psychotic warfare more (not a far leap, let’s be honest) if immigration reform starts getting taken seriously.

Sounds like employment opportunities for true American patriots. You know, like Marcus Epstein. What a bunch of losers. With all of the racial nonsense over the healthcare bill, it would be wise for Obama to attempt to side step this one if he can. I almost wish I hadnt just read this. For about 18 hours there, I had a smile in my heart thinking that some dispicable people might have just realised that the 1960s were a really long time ago. Instead, perhaps last weekend was the 1950s and they now intend to ensure that the 1960s turn out differently.

You’re not kidding….they are going to call us all racists for wanting to kick the illegals the hell out of the USA…..

Obama can fool the people with that marxist health care gibberish….but you can’t fool them on illegals….because the people just beat back an amnesty bill a couple years back….and they aren’t going to take to kindly to Obama giving mexicans citizenship and the right to go after americans jobs

A lot of people were taken in by the sweet offering of commie health care…….nobody has anything to gain by legalizing illegals except democrap politicians who want them as voters

I will never forgive the illegal immigrants at Goldman Sachs, AIG and the SEC for destroying our economy.

    Check Me Out

… in Salon, where I contribute to the Broadsheet blog.

… in Slate, where I’ve recently written an assessment piece on California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman; and ranted about why female journalists in movies are so lame.

… or in the Christian Science Monitor, where I discussed Gen Y views on originality and plagiarism; and sized up Disney’s progress in representing race on the big screen.
