Tiger Woods’ Return Venue: a Women-Excluding Club
The brazilliant Jessica Wakeman at The Frisky points out an interesting caveat in Tiger Woods’ inevitable return to golf: He’ll be jumping back in at a spot that still doesn’t allow women members, and which didn’t allow a black man (like, you know, him) until only 20 years ago.
The venue is the infamous Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, which hosts the Masters tournament. I’m sure many will argue that this couldn’t be avoided; but considering that in addition to all the mud Tiger’s been (deservedly) dragged through in recent months, his image was kicked when it was down this week by the revelation of pages and pages of appallingly dirty text messages sent to porn star Joslyn James.
In addition to the standard sex-talk fare Woods sent James was stuff like him threatening to “slap, spank, bite and fuck till mercy,” and promises to “Slap your face. Treat you like a dirty little whore. Put my cock in your ass and then shove it down your throat.”
In tandem, the texts and the triumphant return to the she-man-woman-haters-golf-club aren’t really the most reassuring signs that Tiger is ready to put women and family first.

Tiger chose the venue very carefully. The Masters is the tightest security, the toughest press pass and they will toss anybody on their ear for even the smallest transgression. It is about the only course in the world where he doesn’t have to fear being heckled (at least a wee bit, as golf fans are not at all like, say, hockey or basketball fans) by the gallery and he probably won’t have to face any pesky questions about his personal life from those pesky reporter types. Which is exactly what he was hoping for and is precisely why he is not entering one of the “warm up” tourneys. Too many variables to try to control out there.
It’s ironic, isn’t it? I wonder if anything will change; these text messages came out after the Masters announcement. Augusta may not want to revisit the makeup of their membership again.
On a side note, you did mean “he-man” in that last sentence, right? Or maybe there’s yet another twist in this ever-weirder story…
