Anti-gay CA Sen. Roy Ashburn arrested after visit to gay club
And another one bites the dust …
Joining a long list of Republican legislators with a history of opposing gay rights legislation who turn out to have gay – ahem -sympathies, is State Sen. Roy Ashburn, who represents parts of central and Southern California.
According to Sacramento-based CBS13, Ashburn was “was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento, early Wednesday morning. The California Highway Patrol pulled over Senator Roy Ashburn at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday after an officer noticed a black Chevy Tahoe swerving at 13th and L Streets.”
Perhaps Ashburn was simply visiting Faces as part of some detailed research on upcoming legislation, or to catch a glimpse of how society might devolve if further rights are granted to the gay community — the same way a Ugandan pastor recently showed gay porn to his congregation in order to stir up anti-gay sentiments.
CBS13 reports that Ashburn, who is married, had left Faces with another man in the car.
Joe Jervis has a great roundup of Ashburn’s anti-gay voting record, including opposing the creation of a holiday to honor slain activist and legislator Harvey Milk. Jervis also notes that Ashburn received the gold standard of ratings from the Capitol Resource Family Impact Group, and has hosted events on behalf of the Traditional Values Coalition.
According to Ashuburn’s Web site, he “has earned the respect of his fellow legislators as evidenced by his many key assignments.” We’ll see how long that lasts.
