Couple of suggestions:
- Right-wing communications, via Fox News talk-radio, has hit upon the instant-fear trigger story strategy. Immensely successful and profitable.

Not because they are bad guys but a conservative brain is a fear-based brain it research suggest. Teabaggers proof enough. So immediate, real-time, fear triggers "'they' are coming after you/your money/your family right now!" is perfect for social media. Bingo.

- Dems are real squeamish about using emotion-based tools/techniques. They want to reason it out! Well, that's done and gone but their emotions are stuck on that. You see how well that's working! Not!

Repubs are like: "Hey what do I have to say/do to get and keep attention!! Great! Let's go."
Plus, Repub spend a lot of money on Marketing 101. Duh!

Dems feel they're above that. Going to have to feel some pain before that gets lost!

I don't why we should be surprised that the Republicans are Tweeting more than the Democrats, but the article's mocking tone does nobody any credit. At least the Republicans are communicating, albeit by Twitter's limited medium. I think that, for the time being we should give them a "B" fro trying, and wait to see if they can make Tweeting work at what it does best, which is delivering instant updates when news is breaking. Failing that, there's not much to say most of the time, and it may surprise us to hear just how dull their day-to-day lives really are.
