Gavin Newsom quits race for California governor

Gavin NewsomJust an hour or so earlier I was reading about how Jerry Brown’s spokesman possibly violated California law by taping conversations with news reporters. I thought to myself, “This is good news for Gavin Newsom.” Brown, the current attorney general, and Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco, are the top two contenders vying for the Democratic nomination for California governor. It turns out Newsom won’t be needing any dirt on his opponent, since he’s decided to bow out of the race.

Though his campaign was lacking momentum, I was excited by Newsom’s candidacy. He helped bring marriage equality and universal health care to San Francisco – both of which are monumentally important issues. He was marred by an infidelity scandal, much like another promising young mayor who already quit the race – L.A.’s Antonio Villaraigosa – but he seemed to rebound pretty well.

Now, when California’s government is desperate for new ideas, the Democrats’ likely nominee is a man in his 70s who’s already had the job before (and didn’t do a great job, as this account illustrates). Not my idea of freshness.

Newsom is citing his newborn daughter as one of the reasons he decided to quit – but I can’t help but think that he’d probably be handing her a better state to live in if he kept his hat in the ring.

Weird. Unfortunately my first thought always goes to, “What, or who did he do?”

    About Me

I'm a Los Angeles-based writer and editor focusing on pop and politics, race and culture, and where Gen-Yers fit into it all. My writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Christian Science Monitor, WashingtonPost.com, the San Francisco Chronicle and People magazine. Among other things, I'm Oregon-born, hip-hop-addicted, and weirdly optimistic that the journalism business will stay alive.

    What I'm Up To

    Check Me Out

… in Salon, where I contribute to the Broadsheet blog.

… in Slate, where I’ve recently written an assessment piece on California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman; and ranted about why female journalists in movies are so lame.

… or in the Christian Science Monitor, where I discussed Gen Y views on originality and plagiarism; and sized up Disney’s progress in representing race on the big screen.
