Neuro News Nanos

Jar Jar Binks

Image via Wikipedia

Here are this morning’s:

* The psychological immune system — when we experience events that send us into an emotional tailspin it kicks in to try and protect us from the worst of it — in order to feel better we have to conveniently forget some important facts, such as how much we wanted the job we didn’t get, loved the partner who walked out or were enjoying the ice cream we just dropped

* Exercise doesn’t lead to weight loss — no “afterburn” — overcompensation

* Taking out the neurotrash — neuro everything — the typical pattern of most new areas of scientific investigation

* Infant branding — companies seeking an edge over their rivals should ensure that children are exposed to their brands as early in life as possible — if a brand had been experienced from birth, the students were quicker to recognize it as real than if it had been encountered from age five and up

* 10 geeky laws that don’t exist but should — Lucas’s Law — “There is no movie so beloved that a ’special edition,’ prequel or sequel cannot trample and forever stain its memory.”

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
