Here are this morning’s:

* A gene that predicts credit-card debt — “we show that individuals with a polymorphism of the MAOA gene that has lower transcriptional efficiency are significantly more likely to report having credit card debt” — prior research has linked this genetic variation to lack of conscientiousness, impulsivity, and addictive behavior

* Strokes and tumors causing changes in sexuality — tumor may have caused a middle-aged Virginian man with no history of any misdemeanor to stash child pornography and sexually molest his 8-year-old stepdaughter — a gay man turned straight

* Children’s moral judgments more complicated than previously thought — children and adults both focus on intents, not just outcomes — but children tended to interpret bad outcomes as betraying negligence, even when they’d been told that a person had been careful

* People want opinion, not news — CNN fourth in ratings, behind even its own Headline News — CNN’s punishment for airing “news” while Fox, MSNBC and HLN put on lunatics screaming at the camera

* Exercise and cigarettes — exercise can lessen the power of cigarettes and smoking-related images to grab the attention of smokers — an 11% difference between the time the participants spent looking at the smoking-related images after exercise

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
