Neuro News Nanos: Weekend Edition

Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster

Image via Wikipedia

Here are this weekend’s:

* Fibromyalgia and fMRI — if a fibromyalgia sufferer experiences higher pain levels than a normal person, does it matter that the pain is a result of a specific organic cause or a cycle of expectations of pain? — “Since the placebo effect is all about expectations, the patient must believe that the drug is, in fact, highly effective.”

* Is averageness or symmetry more important in facial attractiveness? — just averageness was important for women — for men, both mattered

* Rethink Blink — “Dijksterhuis’s studies and the points made by Gladwell in his book Blink can’t be discounted.” — “Although unconscious thought may not be superior to conscious thought, it is frequently not that inferior.”

* Thinking you’re blushing makes you blush more — an uncomfortable cycle of self-consciousness and negative social expectations — sounds like my Friday night

* Five discoveries made while dreaming — “Yesterday” — Frankenstein

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
