Palin/Birther Mutual FAIL

So, maybe you’re wondering who would win the all-important “Birther Primary” in the Republican Party — remember, 58% of Republicans believe it’s at least “somewhat likely” President Obama is a Communist Nigerian Muslim agent sent to take down America from the inside.

Wonder no longer. Their favorite candidate for 2012? Sarah Palin.

From PPP (poll PDF here):

-Not surprisingly only 16% of them approve of Obama’s job performance while 75% disapprove. I think Mike Littwin might have hit on a pretty good point in the Denver Post today, which is that some of the people who purport to be birthers might not really believe it but that it’s shorthand for their general unhappiness with the President.

-The birthers love them some Sarah Palin. She’s the most popular politician in the mix with them at 66% favorability. Next is Mike Huckabee at 58%, followed by Newt Gingrich at 46%, and Mitt Romney at 43%.

PPP also spins that around another way: 63% of all Americans with a favorable opinion of Sarah Palin are birthers.”

Among the non-birthers, Huckabee seems to be most popular. And while Palin’s favorables aren’t terrible with this group at 58%, she has the worst spread, because she has huge negatives among the non-crazies.

Now the obvious question: Do these people actually believe Alaska is part of America?

Actually, all Palin supports are crazy “birthers”. They think Palin was born with a brain.

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
