Neuro News Nanos: Weekend Edition

Here are this weekend’s:

* If violent media makes us violent, should it still enjoy First Amendment protection? — of course, we didn’t need modern neuroscience to tell us “words can hurt” — but do some things bypass our conscious control?

* Magic and neuroscience — “Every time you perform a magic trick, you’re engaging in experimental psychology,” Teller says — yes, Teller

* Is Netflix an efficient way to maximize our movie utility? — many people could just rent individual movies and come out ahead — but is the pressure to watch more movies a good in itself?

* Castration enthusiasts — some are all talk, but some actually pick up the scissors and go to town — “voluntary eunuchs” report that they are pleased that they have had their testicles removed and seem mentally healthy

* People who frowned in pictures as kids and teens are more likely to get divorced — a search of my family photo albums would not render good news for my wife — of course, a lifetime of putting up with me might not be such great news, either

    Ryan,

What a nice treat! I’m so far behind the six of you I follow, it will take a couple of days to catch up.

*If media makes us violent, should it still enjoy First Amendment protection
Yes, it should. Parents are responsible for their children and should take a little interest in the particular video games their kids watch. It’s funny, as I write this, Boston Legal is on with a case about a kid having a heart attack and dying from playing one of these games because of their addictive nature, his lack of sleep and increased dopamine levels.

    *Magic and neuroscience
Magic isn’t something that interests me much and I found the article tedious until they mentioned pretending to throw the stick for a dog during a game of fetch and suddenly I completely understood everything I had read up to that point. So, I reread it and got a lot more out of it the second time.

*Is Netflix an efficient way to maximize our movie utility?
I belonged to Netflix for a couple years when you actually received the DVD’s in the mail. For me, it wasn’t worth it. I just can’t sit still night after night for two-plus-hours forcing myself to escape when I don’t always need to.

    *Castration enthusiasts
Thank God that was a short read. My balls ache just from reading it and not in a good way. But, to each his own.

*People who frowned in pictures as kids and teens are more likely to get divorced
Well, if I ever get married, it should be a success! My Mom pulled out our childhood photos recently when I wasn’t there, but everyone noticed how happy I was in all my photos. Too bad it’s not an indicator of whether you will get married or not. The smile certainly got me laid.

    Sandy

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
