Supreme Court Nomination Time

soto

When millions of people around America who wouldn’t know a stare decisis if it bent them over and tickled their anus will suddenly have an opinion on who should ascend to the nation’s highest court.

    Ryan,

If anything or anyone bent me over and tickled my anus, I would know what or who it was. But, to make sure I didn’t make an ass of myself, (pun unintentional.) I did look it up for fun. I’m much more wordy than the dictionary.

Stare decisis is Latin (How appropriate today.) To stand by decided matters. A doctrine or policy of following rules or principles laid down in previous judicial decisions unless they contravene the ordinary principles of justice. If you hadn’t posed it the way you had, this paragraph would be twice as long, but accurate. I do have a strong vernacular.

I feel childlike today in the sense that what I really wanted was for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton nominated. (Lifetime tenure.) My brother is always reminding me that Secretaries of State usually don’t last the whole four or eight years of an administration. I think he said it was three to six on average depending on whether it was one-term or two-terms. Do I think Hillary is most qualified? No. But, like a child, I want what I want when I want it. I know only what President Obama said about his nominee this morning and I am sure that will all be up for scrutiny as the Senate goes about its job during the confirmation process.

Sonia Sotomayor is not someone I claim to know anything about. She is considered brusque and that might be entertaining against Scalia. When people describe me, they usually say I am abrupt and incorrigible. I take both as compliments. Now I am going to go through the day thinking about my anus. Thanks a lot! Welcome back from your holiday weekend.

    Sandy

Ryan I think the fact that Drudge leading off with “Obama Picks Latina” pretty much says where we can expect this battle to go to. Already Newsmax is pushing the ethnic issue:

Sotomayor Video: Judges Make Policy, Latinas Better Than Whites

Another shining example of how the right just doesn’t get it, and refuses to acknowledge the changes that are going on in our country.

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
