Neuro News Nanos: Programming Note

I’m going to try out Neuro News Nanos as a morning feature. So, here are this morning’s:

* Do pitchers hit badly because they’re expected to? — what happens when a pitcher hits third? — what happens when I pretend to know anything about baseball?

* Breaking spending addiction — list the 10 most expensive things that you have ever paid for — then, list the 10 items that you have ever bought that gave you the most happiness — count how many items appear on both lists

* The link between sleep and weight — sleep more, weigh less? — it works for rats

* Men are hard-wired to suspect infidelity — the burdens of cuckoldry are greatest to men — an unfaithful woman still gives birth to her own child — her unwitting partner devotes time and energy to raising a rival’s offspring

* An iPhone app for walking and chewing gum — okay, for walking and texting — put your life in the hands of a 0 megapixel camera!

    Ryan,

I found Neuro-News-Nanos rather interesting today. By responding, it gives me a chance to talk about…well, me.

*Do pitchers hit badly because they’re expected to?
It really would make for an interesting study. It gives the example of a pitcher hitting third in the line-up and the results were not bad. I wish there had been an example of a pitcher hitting eighth or ninth. It really would be interesting to see.

    *Breaking spending addiction
I took the challenge. (list the 10 most expensive things that you have ever paid for — then, list the 10 items that you have ever bought that gave you the most happiness — count how many items appear on both lists) The answer is one. My brand new ‘95 Ford F-250 (white) was my favorite vehicle I have ever had. I picked it because it sat up higher than all the other trucks at some mega Ford dealership on Halloween ‘94 while it was pissing down rain outside Portland, Oregon. I had a friend with me and we kept the salesman out in the rain with us and we got a pretty damn good deal. Cheryl knows how to handle salesmen…I don’t. She wore him down by dragging him back out in the rain every time she didn’t like an answer he gave her. When I drove the truck off the lot, it stopped raining. (Eight hours later.)

Interesting to note: The thing I bought that gave me the most happiness cost $14.95. There is no sales tax in Oregon. It was my cat, Maxine, all-black domestic shorthair. Not a mark on her and she was so tiny. She died on April Fool’s day this year and I loved that cat more than anything or anyone ever in my life. It was really hard to let her go after 18 years together. I miss my little baby.

*The link between sleep and weight
If I sleep too long, I can lose up to 17 LBS. in a 20-hour-period. I have to take a drug called Desmopressin which is a component of insulin. If I don’t take it or I sleep through my next dose, I will get up and piss away all that weight. Before Desmopressin, I would get up and piss up to twelve times a night. My record weight loss was 17 LBS. as I was exhausted and slept 20 hours. I’m prescribed the maximum. It has something to do with my Type 2 Diabetes and it is not excess water weight.

*Men are hard-wired to suspect infidelity
Couldn’t tell you. Say I start seeing someone new. I am a honeymoon phase kind of guy. Sex every night (staying over) for about three months until the “relationship” starts to change and then I am done.

My goal for my next victim is to see it through and see what happens. I watch my brothers and their wives and see the happiness that commitment and companionship seem to bring even after the sex isn’t as exciting anymore. Then I guess I will know what it is like to be hard-wired to suspect infidelity.

The last one I am going to skip. I do not do anything but enjoy my journey from point A to point B. I like to be aware of my surroundings and I will not even answer the phone while I am traveling. Anything else can wait until I arrive at my destination.

    That was fun!

    Sandy

    About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
