Comment of the Day
Full disclosure first – My wife is an experienced classroom teacher. Hold a Masters in Mathematics and has coordinated Math curriculum in a middle school. She is now a district administrator in the Mathematic Dept. We are both about as liberal as it comes (left of Obama, ACLU types, etc.). In my opinion Ryan is correct.
The problem is that an educator’s “labor” needs to be dynamic and creative. A labor union is generally neither of those. There are some extraordinary teachers in each and every school. But when you really look at the reform required to update the education system in the US the #1 road block is the NEA state affiliates. They are just change adverse and protectionist. Being skeptical about “accountability” is one thing. Being outright anti-accountability is another matter entirely.
