Here are today’s:

* Seven year itch — a study on the effects of boredom on marital satisfaction — uh, it’s not good

* Top 11 geek defenses for Swine Flu — “add cleric to party” — “update virus profiles”

* Do we make decisions using statistical reasoning? — not instinctively, on things like college visits — but we can be primed to do so

* The human brain can recognize objects much faster than some thought — animals, chairs, human faces, fruits and vehicles — what was being seen could be predicted by looking at the visual cortex

* Use checklists — hospitals that introduce them for surgery have much better outcomes — the rate of death at the hospitals was 1.5% before the checklist was introduced and declined to 0.8% afterward — the rate of complications was 11% before the checklist, declining to 7% after — humans make mistakes; find ways to deal with it

About Me

I'm a freelance writer and blogger based in Brooklyn, NY. My background is mostly in politics. I've worked on the editorial boards of the New York Sun and New York Post. In 2006, I wrote a book, "The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party" (Wiley). I've also done my share of freelancing, for places like the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, Reason, and RealClearPolitics.

These days, I'm interested in humanity's ever-expanding understanding of its own irrationality. Hence, this blog.
