An experiment finds that destroying targeted neurons in rats seems capable of erasing specific fearful memories. This is still a ways away from any possible application in humans.
(Though, as the article linked above discusses, there is a drug that has been found to reduce the emotional impact of fearful memories in humans — something with a potential application in treating people for posttraumatic stress disorder.)
