Oh Gawd, No! Those Crazy, Wacky Brits: Strawberry and Cream Sausage

When does it all just go too far? Does it get anymore disgusting than this?  Surely someone lost a bet and was forced to market this bizarre concoction:

Wimbledon’s favourite snack is to get a savoury twist with the launch of a limited- edition sausage that allows hungry tennis fans to combine two summer food favourites: strawberries and cream and barbecued meat.

The Berry Banger serves up an ace by combining strawberries, creme fraiche and mint with sausage.

Are you kidding? I’m getting queasy just writing about this. Perhaps this is just a great example of a press agent gone mad. But, to the credit of the English supermarket chain, Waitrose, the story is being picked up. Well, at least the press release is making the rounds.  The Herald commends the bangers mixture of sweet and savory:

It will be available during the two weeks of Wimbledon so that those torn between a fruity treat and a mouthwatering banger will be able to have their sausage and eat it.

The folks over at Sky News are also enthusiastic about the new exciting product, calling it an exotic mix.

Wimbledon watchers bored with traditional tennis fare like strawberries and cream are to be offered a new alternative.

Tim Hayward from The Guardian, went a step further… he actually tried it:

I cook the sausage carefully. A gentle low sizzle in half duck fat and half clarified butter (I’m on a diet). I lay it on a plate, adjusting the position for the most appetising effect and I taste it, bringing to bear my highly developed palate and honed critical faculties.

It is only at this point it becomes apparent that something in the process has gone terribly, terribly wrong. Mint, jam, strawberries and sausage meat only ever occur together in one place: the pants of a four year-old after a badly catered birthday party.

This isn’t ordinary food – it’s synaesthetic mugging.

Nothing like a new twist on an old tradition. Sounds like Waitrose should head back to the drawing board.

    About Me

I am a food fanatic. Sardines, raw shrimp, white anchovies are just a few things that make me happy. I love that “ah moment” when you bite into something so delicious you have to pause before you can speak. Hopefully, you know what I mean. As a former Food Network host and producer, I have been given an All Access Pass into the culinary world and count many in the food community my close friends. I applaud their passion and dedication. And, I am willing to admit, I’m a bit chef-obsessed. As a culinary junkie, I follow food stories from around the globe; I am enticed by the wonderful, the weird, the sweet, and the savory.

As for my background, I've worked as a producer and/or host with NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, VH1, A Current Affair, Food Network, BBC-A, Fine Living, Showtime, Direct TV, and now, People.com.
