I forgot Chris Matthews was white…

A native American

A native American

…until I heard him:

…talking last night on Rachel Maddow’s show about Barack Obama being a cowboy who needs to defeat the “allegorical” Indians. Maddow, always quick to attack those who disparage gays, didn’t say a word.

…saying numerous times over the last few months that tribalism in the U.S. is dead, never recognizing that there are 564 federally recognized American Indian tribes and a bunch of other state-recognized Indian tribes. Those tribes aren’t dead, Chris (by the way, “tribe” is the root word of tribalism).

…repeatedly heralding John Wayne as an American patriot. Wayne once said in a Playboy interview: “I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [Native Americans], if that’s what you’re asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.”

…calling Pat Buchanan a friend of his show. The conservative commentator has said federal support to tribes equates to a “pigout of pigouts.”

…putting on a ruse that he’s living in a post-racial America.
