Lou ‘Cesar Chavez’ Dobbs – champion of Latinos everywhere

Lou Dobbs, the man who told us just nine short months ago, that “Mexico has become our enemy” is today touting himself as a champion of the American Hispanic community.

Seriously. I couldn’t make it up.

As Dobbs contemplates a third party run for a New Jersey U.S. Senate seat in 2012 against the Senate’s only Hispanic member, Robert Menendez, it suddenly occurs that the people who have been on the business end of his hate talk for all these years turn out to be pretty important when it comes to elections.

Who knew?

Fortunately for Lou, he’s just been kidding all along. He  never actually meant any of it.

Sitting for an interview with Maria Celeste on Spanish-speaking television network, Telemundo, Dobbs spoke directly to his ‘peeps’ -

Whatever you have thought of me in the past, I can tell you right now that I am one of your greatest friends and I mean for us to work together.
Via Wall Street Journal

It gets better.

Dobbs, who has made billions of pesos and built his career vilifying anyone who dared suggest an amnesty for immigrants in the country illegally, now says, “we need the ability to legalize illegal immigrants under certain conditions.”

Again, I couldn’t make this up. I’m not that clever.

It turns out that Dobbs doesn’t just hate Latinos because they have the gall to try and care for their families doing jobs that Americans won’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Now we know that ‘Politician Lou’ believes that Hispanics are among the stupidest people on the planet because who else but an idiot could possibly buy such a mouthful of absolute crap?

Bad news, Lou. The Hispanic community is anything but stupid and more than capable of spotting a shameless, despicable hypocrite such as yourself – particularly after you’ve spent years using your public forum to attack them mercilessly.

Is it possible that Dobbs is so delusional that he is actually buying the nonsense he is selling? He did, after all, recently inform us that there is nothing crazy about the idea that he might run for the presidency – despite that the fact that it is completely crazy.

When Celeste pointed out to her guest that he is pretty much the most despised man in the Latino community, Dobbs corrected her, indicating that Latinos don’t hate him at all – it’s all a conspiracy of the Left to make everyone believe Hispanics hate him.

Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition would beg to differ. Here is the text of the statement he issued after Dobbs left CNN:

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and the Latino community congratulate CNN management for directing Lou Dobbs to either return to being a credible journalist or find another home.
Lou Dobbs’ editorializing and hate speech-aimed directly at the Latino community-had become an embarrassment to CNN and placed the network’s integrity in great question.
Dobbs’ continuous misrepresentations and misinformation regarding the Latino community had become a cause of great concern to all people of good will who work day-in and day-out to make this a better nation.
As Dobbs leaves CNN the Latino community will turn its ear toward the radio network that allows and encourages him to continue his shrill hate speech and factual misrepresentations.

So, here’s the deal, Lou. If you can show us that even 10% of the Latino community is prepared to support you in a run for any office in the land, including dogcatcher, I will personally send you a campaign contribution for the maximum amount permitted under the applicable campaign finance laws.

That’s my promise and you have it in writing.

About Me

I am an attorney in Southern California, and a frequent writer, speaker and consultant on health care policy and politics. To that end, I am active member of the Association of Health Care Journalists. Based in beautiful Santa Monica, California, I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to be a contributing editor to True/Slant. I've recently finished a book designed to make the health care debate understandable to the average reader, and expect it to be out in the next five months or earlier. In my 'spare time', I continue to write for television and, occasionally, for comic books.

My checkered past includes stints in creative writing and production for television where I did strange things like founding the long running show "Access Hollywood" and serving, for many years, as the president of the Marvel Character Group where I had the distinct pleasure of being one of Spider-man's bosses.
