The perils of Prejean

Only in America.

Hot girl enters beauty pageant. Attacks gay marriage. Loses pageant but wins her 15 minutes of fame as a voice of the political right, drawing big television ratings wherever she goes.

Eventually, things begin to quiet down. Having failed to win a job as one of those good looking, conserva-blondes on Fox News, and without Donald Trump to fuel the publicity fires, Prejean-mania begins to peter out.

Suddenly, and just in the nick of time, a video-tape conveniently emerges showing Prejean having sex with herself .

Hallelujah…she’s back! Once again, the hot girl from whatever that beauty pageant was is being interviewed on The Today Show, Fox News and just about every show you can imagine. And if she’s not actually appearing on the show, the shows are still talking about her. Then comes that shelf half-life extending appearance on Larry King, where Prejean apparently merited an entire hour of airtime. Infuriated that she has to speak to people calling-in to the show, she pretends she is going to walk off the show  but just can’t quite bring herself to give up the camera time as she pretends she can’t hear King by answering King’s question “Can you hear me” with, “No, Larry, I can’t hear you.”

Perfect.

Prejean’s new round of media exploitation finds her spending a few minutes talking about how she was young when she made the tape, how she did it for her boyfriend whom she loved dearly, yada-yada-yada. Then the attention is again turned to her life’s cause- denying gay Americans the right to marry.

Prejean is back, baby! Spreading her anti-gay message near and far as the media rejoices in the opportunity to once again expose this good looking, obscure woman who never had anything to say beyond her opinion that gay people people ‘bad’ – heterosexual people ‘good’.

Meanwhile, in a piece of gay marriage related news receiving very limited press coverage – and only brought to my own attention by a piece published today by Allison Kilkenny here on True/slant – the Catholic Archdiocese has threatened to stop providing social aid to needy people in Washington DC, if the DC City Counsel follows through with their plan to expand gay rights in our nation’s capital.

Apparently Catholic charity has its limits. The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. issued a threat to the City Council on Wednesday saying, it would stop helping residents under its social service programs, unless a proposed same-sex marriage law is changed to its liking. The church wants to feel free to discriminate against gays while receiving public funds and the D.C. Council is having none of it. One council member Phil Mendelson (D-At Large), chairman of the judiciary committee said, bluntly we “will not legislate based on threats.”

Let’s recap. Prejean spreading her anti-gay marriage fills the media airwaves. The Catholic Church’s ultimate hypocrisy in threatening to deny social services to the poor and needy unless the Washington DC governing body follows the church’s social agenda – nowhere in the media.

It’s good to know we continue to have our priorities straight.

    About Me

I am an attorney in Southern California, and a frequent writer, speaker and consultant on health care policy and politics. To that end, I am active member of the Association of Health Care Journalists. Based in beautiful Santa Monica, California, I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to be a contributing editor to True/Slant. I've recently finished a book designed to make the health care debate understandable to the average reader, and expect it to be out in the next five months or earlier. In my 'spare time', I continue to write for television and, occasionally, for comic books.

My checkered past includes stints in creative writing and production for television where I did strange things like founding the long running show "Access Hollywood" and serving, for many years, as the president of the Marvel Character Group where I had the distinct pleasure of being one of Spider-man's bosses.
