Looking for abortion health insurance? Try the RNC
While the health care reform bill passing the House last Saturday does not permit insurance polices including elective abortion benefits to be offered on the national health care exchange- thanks to an amendment offered by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak and supported by all but one Congressional Republican -not to worry. We know where you can aply for work with an employer who does make abortion coverage available in their employee benefits program and are not likely to be participating in the health exchange-
The Republican National Committee.
Really.
The super-sleuths at Politico were able to track down the employer provided health insurance policy at the RNC by checking Federal Election Commission records which revealed that the RNC’s health care policy is purchased from Cigna. A few phone calls later, Politico was able to confirm that the party of pro-life does indeed offer abortion coverage to their employees, despite their avowed, loudly held believe that abortion is…well, you know how the speech goes.
Oops.
Commenting on the revelation, RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told Politico -
The current policy has been in effect since 1991, and we are taking steps to address the issue.
The point Ms. Gitcho was trying to drive home is that the policy had come into existence long before RNC Chairman Michael Steele took over the reigns. Of course, its been about a year since Steele ascended to the top job at the RNC. Considering the problems Steele has with the president’s inability to fully repair the economy in the year he has held his job, one would think that even Steele would have to agree that he’s had enough time to make a small but important change in his organization’s employee benefits program.
As for the steps the RNC is taking to remedy the matter, I’m sure they’ve been hard at it since…well, about sixty seconds after they discovered they had been so brutally and embarrassingly busted.
Or, maybe the RNC is less pro-life than what they would have us to believe. At the least, it hardly seems wrong to ask why they want to deny every woman in the nation the right to purchase a health care policy covering elective abortion while they have been doing so themselves for almost twenty years.
Hypocrisy or incompetency at the highest levels of the GOP. I’ll leave it to the reader to determine which is worse.

It’s not about denying all women an abortion. It’s about denying poor women an abortion. If you can afford your own health insurance, you’re free to get one. But if you’re too poor, we have the right to tell you that you must bear a child, no matter the circumstance. That’s your punishment for being poor.
In the sense that Republicans are supposed to be the party of self-responsibility, they failed to read the same fine print they’re asking millions of American citizens to read so that they can bring down health care costs with their aggregated, informed choices. Thus, in their incompetence, they are still hypocrites.
Funniest thing I have read in a long time. Thanks Rick!
Ahahaha!!! Oh god… can’t breathe… choking on… irony… hehehe. Thanks Mr. Ungar, I really needed this.
