California ballot initiative to ban divorce
While the infamous Proposition 8 limited those who can legally be married in the State of California, a newly proposed ballot initiative would amend the California Constitution to deny everyone the right to get a divorce.
California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has today authorized the backer of an initiative to ban divorce in the State of California to begin collecting signatures to put a proposed contitutional amendment on the ballot. If the backers succeed in getting the almost 700,000 signature required, the Golden State’s voters will have the opportunity to take government by initiative to all new heights of insanity.
Here’s the official text of the proposed initiative:
ELIMINATES THE LAW ALLOWING MARRIED COUPLES TO DIVORCE. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the ability of married couples to get divorced in California. Preserves the ability of married couples to seek an annulment. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Savings to the state of up to hundreds of millions of dollars annually for support of the court system due to the elimination of divorce proceedings.

If the busted budget wasn’t enough to cause people to avoid the state like the Plague, this should pretty much get the job done.

Divorce lawyers aren’t going to be too happy about this one.
Amen!

The gay community may have lucked out. At least they won’t be stuck if they want to get out of a marriage having not been allowed to get in.
