Afghan Desk Weekly Roundup

The biggest story at The Desk this week was our exclusive breaking news about Bowe Bergdahl, the US soldier who my source says walked away from his unit and left “a note behind that said he was going to the mountains to find himself. He took a journal and 4 or 5 knives with him.” We soon got reax from a US soldier who said, “Overall this is a sad case for all except the enemy,” true enough.

Next we got a live report from Scott Kesterson in Gardez, who witnessed the aftermath of multiple suicide-bomb attacks, nearly all of which were foiled. He later sent us his photos of that bloody day, showing the burka-clad corpses of male insurgents.

To top the week off, treachery was afoot when The Desk fell ill.

Be sure to stick around this weekend. I’ll have news on Saturday and, of course, Sunday morning cartoons from Afghanistan.

    About Me

I’m a writer and reporter living in Kabul, Afghanistan. For the past four years I’ve been an investigative reporter at various Village Voice Media weeklies, and before that I worked on documentary films in New York City.

I am currently a journalism mentor and news editor for The Killid Group, a not-for-profit radio and print organization based in Kabul, with five radio stations and many bureaus throughout Afghanistan.

My writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Christian Science Monitor, Village Voice, Modern Drunkard and other fine publications.

Originally from Philadelphia, I’ve also worked in south Florida and Nashville, Tennessee.
