About Me

My first published novel, Spelljammer: The Ultimate Helm (published under the pseudonym Russ T. Howard), was published in 1993 by TSR Books. The novel was a work for hire in the Spelljammer fantasy series and was written in twelve weeks. The novel made it to the Waldenbooks Bestseller list in October, 1993. Spelljammer was followed by Dungeon of Fear (pseudonym: Michael Andrews) and Castle of the Undead (pseudonym: Nick Baron), two interactive 50,000-word novels in TSR’s Endless Quest series. These were also works for hire and were written in eight and three weeks, respectively.

My first published novella, "Puppy Love Land," appeared in the April 1996 Fantasy and Science Fiction, and was later nominated onto the Preliminary Ballot for the 1997 Horror Writers of America Award for Best Novella.

In 2003 I assisted in writing a short independent film, Cutting In, with Darin De Paul and Mike Speller, which was filmed in New York City and went through the film festival submission process.

I’ve had articles and essays published in Omni, Premiere, Cat Fancy, Gauntlet, Storyboard, The Stephen King Companion (associate editor), and in regional magazines and newspapers, including the Richmond Times-Dispatch, where I was a book reviewer, the Virginian Pilot, PortFolio, and the Daily Press. I’ve written unproduced teleplays and have pitched story ideas to Star Trek: The Next Generation in Los Angeles. In 2000, I was a judge of fiction and nonfiction for Rebel, the annual literary magazine for East Carolina University. I’ve been interviewed on The Full Nelson (Fox), Court TV and the Financial News Network (radio). I’ve been a guest and panelist at Sci-Con, a science fiction convention in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and I’ve given lectures on writing to groups and schools throughout southeastern Virginia.
