About Me

I'm deputy editor of The Chronicle Review magazine of The Chronicle of Higher Education (http://chronicle.com/review). I've written freelance arts, books, and other pieces for The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The American Prospect, The Weekly Standard, and many other publications. When I was young, my parents hauled me to countless art-house movies, forever skewing my sense of reality. For that I am very grateful. I've also written several screenplays (http://rokovoko.blogspot.com/search/label/SCREENPLAY) that were lavishly produced and critically acclaimed -- in my head. I compose music (http://stardustmusic.blogspot.com) too.

Professional

I'm Known For...

I'm not known, really. But I do take pride in a headline I once wrote for Newsday about a massage-parlor police raid: '8 Pinched in Rubdown Roundup.'

My Greatest Achievement

Wooing and marrying the former table-tennis champion of both Connecticut and Pennsylvania

My Biggest Regret

I find that little regrets add up sometimes to larger amorphous regrets that are difficult to label.

I Truly Respect

I'm in awe of most people I get to know well. The things people aspire to and survive and learn from never cease to amaze me.

Moments I'd Like To Forget

When the engine stalled in a prop plane I was riding in for a story about how dangerous prop planes are. It's not as though I hadn't been warned. It also proved, once again, that newspaper reporting interns will do just about anything.

How I Pay For This Wardrobe

What makes you think I'm wearing anything?

Blocks I've Been Around

Not that wizened yet (or if I am, don't tell me). When I go around blocks, it usually means I'm lost.

Things That Really Happened

Once shared a cab with Red Auerbach!

This Is Making Me Think - Hard...

The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times make me think hard, often way too hard, every day.

This Makes My Teeth Itch

Actually, the expression "makes my teeth itch" makes my teeth itch.
