Turkish politician in sex video scandal (NSFW)

The leader of Turkey’s main opposition party was forced to step down on Monday in a sex scandal. A video that apparently shows former foreign minister Deniz Baykal engaging in a variety of sexual acts with parliamentary deputy Nesrin Baytok was leaked onto the internet. The video, which does not show graphic sexual activity until two minutes in, is shown above.

Ms. Baytok is Mr. Baykal’s former secretary.

Deniz Baykal, leader of the Republican People’s Party, is the former vice-president of the Socialist International and Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Republican People’s Party is the second largest political party in Turkey. Baykal is an ardent secularist who believes in separating church and state, while the ruling Justice and Development Party has quietly been trying to reintroduce religion into government.

As a result, rumors are flying in the Turkish press that Baykal was framed by his political enemies. The sex video was apparently filmed on a hidden camera. The existence of the sex tape was leaked in a scoop by Vakit, a right-wing newspaper aligned with the Justice and Development Party. For their part, Vakit claims they were leaked the video by sources within Baykal’s own party.

Public sympathy for Baykal in Turkey is relatively low: He has a popular opinion of being a bellicose and self-righteous technocrat – a sort of Turkish equivalent of former California governor Gray Davis.

Baykal is alleging conspiracy too:

“This is not a sex tape, this is a conspiracy….Those who were behind this conspiracy did it for political aims,” Deniz Baykal, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), told a news conference.

“I am resigning from the CHP chairmanship. But my resignation does not mean that I am giving in or running away from this conspiracy. On the contrary, it is a challenge,” he added.

The sex tape came out the exact same week that Baykal’s party threatened to scuttle Turkey’s entry into the European Union. In that same week, other members of Baykal’s party accused a rival politician of hiring a hitman to kill him.

Neither Baykal’s wife nor Baytok’s husband has commented publicly on the sex video yet.
