List of GOP portrayals of Pelosi reads like a joke, sadly isn’t

It seems pretty obvious at this point that the GOP just doesn’t really like women.  In fact, if you look closely at some of the most hateful ones (and the ones who spend a LOT of time hating gays) you’ll discover that many of them literally don’t like women.  They like men.  Like, like-like men, which is TOTALLY FINE, except if you spend your life in a hateful crusade against men who like men.

But I digress.  It seems that most Republicans, regardless of who they’re sexually attracted to, can all get behind hating on women.  Right now, their target is Nancy Pelosi– and while Republicans hate male Democrats too, they seem especially unhappy about the fact that they’ve been foiled by a LADY.  And they have the collective maturity of a 3rd grader.  Here’s a list of all the different ways they’re portraying the Speaker of the House.  Play this game: guess if these are real, or if they came from a joke newspaper!  I really hope they’re jokes!

  • [via TPM]:
  • At the Conservative Political Action Conference, one of the after-parties featured a Pelosi pinata as the entertainment.
  • An internal RNC fundraising document obtained by Politico compared Pelosi to Cruella de Vil.
  • The RNC also linked her image with “Pussy Galore” in a James Bond-style video targeting her comments about the CIA.
  • At the Capitol tea party last November, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) told a screaming crowd, “Fellow patriots, go tell your Congressman, you’re not going to eat this rotten stinking fish that is — Pelosi health care!”
  • Last fall, a tea party group in central Virginia scrapped plans to burn Pelosi in effigy outside Rep. Tom Perriello’s (D-VA) office after getting criticism that it was too much.

I really hoped that Pussy Galore one was a joke, but sadly, the above block quote is a list from TPM and they’re all real.

Again, it’s difficult and complicated to call “misogyny” on a group that makes hating people into a sport.  The Republicans (and the teabaggers) will stop at nothing to score a low blow on a Democrat.  But there are subtle ways that their criticisms target Pelosi’s gender– look at the Fox News front page today, and you’ll see 2 unflattering pictures of Pelosi.  Google her, and the 6 out of the 7 first images that come up are cartoonish caracatures of her.  It’s a special thing, making fun of a woman– you can not only make fun of who she is, but what she looks like!  We have seen the same treatment toward Hilary Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, even Sarah Palin– she’s usually not called ugly, but her looks are way more part of the debate around her than they would be if she was a man. If you google “Mitch McConnell” or “John Boehner,” images don’t even come up in the main part of the search.

So, I guess, either we need to start making fun of McConnell and Boehner’s faces too, or the Republicans need to lay the fuck off.  And as long as we’re acting like 3rd graders, I invite anyone who has a good zinger on a Republican man’s looks to leave it in the comments.  In the mean time, I found this:

    About Me

I am a stand-up comic and writer living in Brooklyn. I also teach theater and comedy to elementary-school kids in the Bronx. My writing and comedy videos have been featured on the women's comedy website Funny Not Slutty, Punchline Magazine, and EDGE.

I co-write and co-star in a web series with my brother called John and Molly Get Along, which can be found on Youtube.

I really enjoy a lot of goofy pop culture stuff, but I'm also a feminist, which makes things difficult. That's what I like to write about.
