Happy International Women’s Day!

v128Give it up for women!  March is Women’s History Month, and today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day!  Here’s a few things to be excited about:

  • A woman won Best Director last night at the Academy Awards for the first time ever.  Amazingly, in the 400 total nominations over the the 82 years the Oscars have existed, only 4 women have been nominated.
  • Apparently, every year UNESCO launches something called “Women Make the News,” which is “a global initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in the media.”  So that’s awesome.
  • This year is International Women’s Day’s 100th anniversary!
  • HuffPo has made a list of must-read books on women’s equality.
  • March 3rd was America’s Sexuality Day, and that’s good news for everyone.  If you’re like me and didn’t know it existed, I think we can all go ahead and celebrate it a few days late.
  • Speaking of good news for everyone, I just discovered that Babeland has a blog!  Any ambitious plans for today have been derailed.

Also, I just learned that in the 30s, there was an effort to get Susan B. Anthony added to the creepy, manifest-destiny-loving heads of Mount Rushmore.  Then Congress made it so they could only get funding to finish the four heads they started.  While I have to say that Mount Rushmore is probably one of America’s most problematic monuments, it would have been cool to have a woman in the mix.

More fun facts on women are sure to come throughout the day.

    About Me

I am a stand-up comic and writer living in Brooklyn. I also teach theater and comedy to elementary-school kids in the Bronx. My writing and comedy videos have been featured on the women's comedy website Funny Not Slutty, Punchline Magazine, and EDGE.

I co-write and co-star in a web series with my brother called John and Molly Get Along, which can be found on Youtube.

I really enjoy a lot of goofy pop culture stuff, but I'm also a feminist, which makes things difficult. That's what I like to write about.
