Gays, Catholics, and the best protest sign ever
It’s been a big, wonderful, gay day for civil rights in Washington DC. Same-sex couples lined up to get their marriage licences. Afterwards, they were given cupcakes! Enchanting pictures of the happy couples can be found here.
In an interesting switcheroo, the Catholic Church (more specifically, private social service agency Catholic Charities of Washington, DC) is so mad about this, they are threatening to cut off their spousal benefits program for their employees, just so that the gays can’t get their gay hands on Catholic health insurance. The employees who are already married (the straight ones) won’t lose their coverage, but all new employees will be denied, gay or straight. Because you never know where a gay is hiding. This logic kind of reminds me of how, in elementary school, the teacher would scapegoat one kid as an excuse to punish the whole class. Only instead of the class missing recess since Tommy was chewing gum, the class is denied access to health care, because Tommy wanted equal rights. Damn you, Tommy!
So, that’s a shit-blemish on an otherwise triumphant day. Luckily, we have some hilarious Jesus sex jokes to cheer us up. Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church (a very different–but still Jesus-loving/gay-hating– group than Catholic Charities) came with their freaky signs to rain on the gay parade, but the reliable Phelps counter-protestors were ready. I especially like this one:

sassy!
But I give the title of Best Protest Sign Ever to this one:

YES!!!
REACH AROUNDS FOR JESUS!!!
In even-better news, the party continues tomorrow in Mexico City. Same-sex marriages will become legal, setting a precedent for the number of Latin American countries who already have Civil Unions but whose LGBT communities are pushing for marriage equality.
And lastly, I just watched Theodore Olson and David Boies on Bill Moyers Journal, discussing their plan to go all the way to the Supreme Court to defend same-sex marriage. It is both incredibly informative and straight up heartwarming. Check it out.
