Miles-

In a week where we are all wrapped in nostalgia thanks for sharing this wonderful chapter of your life.

I suspect that you don't need anyone else to tell you how fortunate you were--you truly sat in the presence of a giant.

Miles - how great to read the account of your mission to Black Rock. I remember how thrilled all of us at CNN were that Walter Cronkite would be joining us for John Glenn's return to space, I had no idea that you were given this special mission in the wake of John Holliman's untimely death. My family and I had just that month returned to Atlanta from overseas. Thanks for your reflections on a stellar pair of journalists, looking forward to the rest of the story.

Thank goodness Walter Cronkite was not the only journalist with a "fire in his belly" working the beat. A younger man has since ably demonstrated how that torch is passed. What a marvelous remembrance to share with us, Miles.

For me, at the other end of the television experience, Walter Cronkite represented the voice of The News. It wasn't really news if it was not reported by him, now was it?. People often remember his voice - so soothing; his manner - so steady and confident. But it's the personal Walter that shines. He could flash anger (as you found out) that could turn its recipient into a pillar of salt. He was so unflappable, that a mere catch in the throat rose to the level of expressing the fear and terror of an entire nation when President Kennedy died. His wordless giggles told us the Moon landing had been successful.

None like him before or since. We have the video to relive virtually his entire career in television. You, Miles, have the inestimable privilege of personal memory. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great story. What an honor it must have been to work with the great man. This article shows that you have a bit more in the arsenal than we usually see.

Miles, you are following in his footsteps and you are the same premier space reporter as he was. J
