‘Fight Club’ is 10 years old – punch somebody!

In the face. Hard.

This is the end... beautiful friend...

This is the end... beautiful friend...

On the eve of the 10 year anniversary of the movie Fight Club, the folks over at Empire have put together a fantastic in-depth story, “saga” really, of the production; it’s a soup-to-nuts Fight Club tell-all, and it’s pretty great. It covers everything from the way Chuck Palahniuk threw himself with increasing violence into the writing of his book, to how Fight Club could well have become Quentin Tarantino’s third film. For Club fans, it’s a must read.

How The Novel Began:

Chuck Palahniuk wrote the novel after an “altercation” on a camping trip in the mid-1990s. “I went back to work the next week with my face completely trashed. My eyes were just panda-black.” Back at the truck company where he worked, co-workers looked away when they asked if he did anything over the weekend. “I would say, ‘Look at my face. C’mon people.’ If you look terrible enough, no one will want to know the truth about you.” As he scribbled what would become Fight Club on clipboards, life imitated art and Palahniuk also found himself getting into more fights.

And now I’m gonna go watch Fight Club. And then kick somebody’s ass. Perhaps even my own.

Er, I hate to be a stick in the mud here, but you broke the first two rules, Mike.

I gotta say, this is one of my all time favorite movies (and book). I saw the movie first but I can’t explain what makes it so good to me, besides Meatloaf’s bitch tits that is. I don’t hear a whole lot of people discussing it with with the cult status I think it deserves. Thanks for posting about this…. it was interesting stuff.

    About Me

According to my mother, I've quit more jobs than most people have ever had. In addition to "Closely Watched," I contribute film centric writing to Nylon and Nylon Guys magazines and "Inside Movies" over at Moviefone.com. Before the internet existed, I lived in Cali, dabbled in film, and rode tacos trucks. My films have been seen at Cannes, Seattle, Telluride, LA and other festivals, and are available on DVD, iTunes and select airplanes. My fiction has appeared in Zoetrope All-Story Magazine, Mississippi Review, Alaska Quarterly, and other literary journals. Follow me on Twitter! It's fun!

    What I'm Up To

    Closely Watched is on hiatus

Closely Watched will be on hiatus for the summer. Thanks to everyone who’s made this page what it is. While I’m gone, all the posts will remain available and comments will be addressed (though perhaps not in a super timely fashion). See you again soon!
