India and Global Warming
The day’s least surprising news, from a Reuters report on India’s election season:
There is little voter pressure on environmental and climate policy because for the vast majority of Indians living in villages and who influence election results, the overriding concerns are more immediate: jobs, housing and health.
Right. And, in other news, residents of Darfur have shown little concern over the problem of art theft.
The story does point out, of course, that “India is among the countries most at risk from climate change that could dry up its rivers, affect the crucial monsoon rains, wipe out forests and glaciers.” But it really isn’t much of a shock that hard-pressed villagers wouldn’t be focusing on long-term challenges. What’s rather more impressive is that the political parties have included global warming strategies in their manifestoes in the first place.
