Great post. My path to ‘getting’ the Boss was similar. Check out singer Jason Isbell if you get a chance. He’s got a more country-influenced sound than Springsteen, but he seems like a worthy heir to Springsteen’s tradition: telling tales of regular people facing real issues.

It’s funny how as you get older, the things that bothered you so much at a younger age become insignificant. I think about some of the folks who may have called me an “oreo” or what have you, but I wouldn’t trade for a second any of my experiences.

Anyway, there’s a whole ‘noter discussion about what being “authentically black” (or “Chicana enough”) is supposed to mean. I’m going to get on that one soon I think.

(As I read your post, I likened your coming-of-age to my own. But mine was spent in a border town, as a Hispanic girl not “Chicana enough” for some folks. Ah well.)

Thanks for your comment! I think it’s important to mention that this problem isn’t limited to conservative pundits, but I think the problem is more pronounced with them sense they tend to reject being called “elite” even when they clearly are.

Excellent post Michael. Brooks, Palin and all the other GOP elites need to be called out when they try to be “just like us”.
