Comparing Jenny Sanford and Elizabeth Edwards

They both got royally screwed over by the men they loved. They both wrote books about it. But when Elizabeth Edwards published hers last year, she was lambasted. Will Jenny Sanford get the same treatment? I don’t think so. For one thing, Edwards made Sanford’s path a little easier to walk, but also, for some reason, I think Sanford comes off better. I don’t know why that is, but look at this video and see what you think.

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. There is a perception, fair or not, that Elizabeth Edwards helped cover for her husband, and allowed him to get within striking distance of the presidency in spite of his massive personal failings. That’s a big reason she gets slammed from the left.

    2. Governor Sanford really wasn’t that national a figure, although he had ambitions of being one. Mrs. Sanford became a national figure because of her husband’s affair; Liz Edwards already was one.

    3. I think Liz Edwards gets criticized for standing by her man in the same way that Hillary Clinton did in the 90s; Jenny Sanford basically dumped her husband over the moment word came out.

Anyways, I’m a believer in the GOP drafting Sanford for 2012. I just can’t understand why conservative stalwarts prefer a attention-seeking, poorly prepared clown like Governor Palin to a highly intelligent conservative business woman like Jenny Sanford. The only thing Palin has in her favor is that she’s a ruthless politician. She hasn’t demonstrated a single skill or facility for policy or vision in any other regard over the course of her career.

So did those factors you mention set up the criticism that Edwards’ book was “just a gratuitous peek into their lives, and one that exposes her kids, by peddling more dregs about their personal family life in a book, and exposes the ex-girlfriend who’s now trying to raise the baby girl, a dead ringer for John Edwards, in South Orange, N.J.?”

It seems Jenny Sanford is doing something similar, but somehow it seems different too. And I’m sure your factors have something to do with that, but I think perhaps it’s the way Jenny Sanford is doing it.

Jenny Sanford for 2012 — man, would that be the ultimate revenge.

When you look at Jenny Sanford, you see a strength in her words. She was not going to stand for his crap and took the kids and left. I think it important though to look at everything Mrs. Edwards was having to deal with at the time (which make John Edwards even more loathsome). Lets also remember the Mrs Edwards had enormous admiration from the public before all the details came out, but I do remember that she always seemed in interviews to be rambling at times almost incoherently, which in hindsight was probably because she was afraid of it all coming unraveled. What is not discussed is the children. The Edwards’ have young children as well and I cant imagine what this is doing to them

    About Me

About 10 years ago, this lady in her 80s told me a childhood story about the day her mom tied her to a post on the porch. It was punishment for riding her tricycle past the curb at the end of their block. In the middle of the story she said to me, 'Wait, mom didn't tie me to the porch, she tied the tricycle to the porch. I just remembered that.' I've been fascinated by memory ever since.

    ......

To make a living during those 10 years, I wrote about religion, politics and people for The Kansas City Star and National Catholic Reporter. I also delved deep into memory by teaching over 2,000 retired Midwesterners how to write their life stories. Now I am putting those two things together -- I'm reporting on memory from science, social and personal perspectives. I am also earning my MA in Journalism at NYU.
