Biden, once critic, now flacking via email for war
Just wanted to point out to an email I was forwarded, sent to all those on Barack Obama’s Organizing for America email list. (This was a list Obama’s presidential campaign put together, thanks in a large part to the then Senator Obama’s perceived desire to “end the war.”) Anyway, this particular message was signed by the one and only Joe Biden–that’s the same vice president who for months had been reportedly arguing behind closed doors for a completely different policy, one that didn’t include a massive escalation of U.S. forces. But what better way to put policy differences behind you then to immediately paper over them in a mass email?
Last night, President Obama laid out his plan to defend our national interest by refocusing our efforts on three clear goals: defeating al Qaeda, stabilizing Pakistan, and breaking the Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan.
To achieve these goals, the President has authorized the rapid deployment of 30,000 more troops in Afghanistan, with a firm commitment to begin bringing our troops home in 2011.
It’s a clean break from the failed Afghanistan policy of the Bush administration, and a new, focused strategy that can succeed.
Please take a moment to watch the President’s address to the nation and read more about his plan.
Our new strategy ends the era of blank checks for Afghanistan’s leaders, facilitates a responsible transition to Afghan security forces, and begins bringing our troops home in 2011.Please take a moment to listen to President Obama outline his plan — and pass this along to anyone you know who wants to learn more:

Thank you,
Vice President Joe Biden

“Each war, it is said, produces its own literary classics. All Quiet on the Western Front for WWI, Catch-22 for WWII, Dispatches for the Vietnam War. So where is the masterpiece from the current Iraq War? The outstanding book by Michael Hastings…is certainly a candidate.”

Why the policy change? Is it bad politics for Biden to disagree with the president, or do they really think they can root out terrorism in Afghanistan?
And what do you think will happen when the U.S. pulls out of Iraq?
[...] Notably, Vice President Joe Biden — who was reportedly a skeptic of the escalation strategy — did not appear on political talk shows to tout the new strategy. Biden did sign his name to an e-mail sent to Obama supporters last week saying he believes it is a “focused strategy that can succeed.” [...]
