Cheney and ‘dithering’ on Afghanistan. Wait, the suicide bomber that tried to kill you didn’t get your attention?
Late to the Cheney smackdown over his comments that Obama has been ‘dithering’ in Afghanistan. The former Vice President seemed to imply that there was some kind of coherent strategy under his administration, when in fact Cheney and Bush had been losing in Afghanistan since at least 2005.
Sort of strange that Cheney doen’t remember this, considering his 2007 trip to the Bagram Airbase, where he was targeted for assassination. The bomb missed and killed over 23 Afghan civilians and an American soldier. Cheney’s comments after the attack:
Told by reporters about the Taliban claim of responsibility for the attack, Mr. Cheney said: “I think they clearly try to find ways to question the authority of the central government. Striking at Bagram with a suicide bomber, I suppose, is one way to do that. But it shouldn’t affect our behavior at all.”
A senior American official traveling with the vice president told reporters that Mr. Cheney reassured Mr. Karzai about America’s commitment to the region, and that Mr. Karzai was “upbeat” about the money and troops that the United States was providing to help Afghanistan.
About 18 months passed before the Bush adminstration ordered up a strategic review from General McKiernan, 18 months where senior officials were still “upbeat.” Just a reminder of the fact-barren and warped world our previous administration lived in, when even a “loud boom” at a very secure American base didn’t strike them as urgent.
