Nine years old in Cabrini-Green
Doreen says one of the first times she realized there was a stigma about living in Cabrini-Green was in early high school, when one of her friends said, “I don’t look down on the people that live there, but…”
That “but…” was telling for Doreen. She knew the bad parts about Cabrini – the drugs, gangs and violence. She was also fortunate enough to know the good parts, the parts the media and the surrounding community usually miss.
She can’t help going back there still, to that place and time that helped create who she is today:
