Community will try to stop Lenise Forrest’s eviction

Eviction BlockadeThe sheriff is supposed to come to evict Lenise Forrest at 9 a.m.

But the community intends to stop it.

Inspired by the South African Anti-Eviction Campaign, the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign and community supporters will gather tomorrow at Lenise’s unit at 933 North Cambridge and block the eviction from happening.

The press release states:

Both elderly and young women and men will put their bodies between the sheriff and Ms. Forrest’s
apartment and refuse to allow her and her family to be made homeless. The confrontation will mark the
launching of a Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign whose message and goals are summarized as “while
the rich get bailed out, we will not allow the poor to be put out.”

If you want to know what happens, you can hear me reporting live on the scene for Vocalo either on 89.5 FM or on the live stream on their website. I’ll be checking in at 8:30 with an interview with Lenise and then periodically through the 9 o’clock hour about the blockade. During that hour, you can will also hear Ryan Flynn, another Cabrini area resident, talking about his home from the studios.

Tune in or check back tomorrow for more.

    About Me

I'm a journalist living in Chicago writing about poverty and public housing. I don't come from the streets - I grew up on a farm. But I'm passionate about urban issues and getting to know people who are completely different from me. I'm quirky, funny and friendly.

I have this idea about journalism - that it should be approachable and less "newsy." I want my stories to make you laugh, cry and draw you in to neighborhoods and situations you don't deal with every day. I hate the broadcaster voice. I hate TV news. I hate the inverted pyramid. I love surprise. I love humor. I love people and telling their stories.

In addition to being a journalist, I also teach dance for the Chicago Public Schools. I don't just do it for the money. I love children and love arts education. I'm also on the board of a new nonprofit dedicated to helping the underserved find jobs called Employing Hope. I write fiction, keep house, and am generally a renaissance woman.
